On Monday, the Air India Boeing 747 took off for the last time, marking the end of an era. Having graced India's skies for nearly five decades, this jumbo jet, affectionately dubbed the ‘Queen of the Skies,’ has been more than just an aircraft; it has been a symbol of national pride. As a tribute to its final voyage, the pilots performed a "Wing Wave," a cherished aviation tradition to honour an aircraft as it retires.
But why was the Boeing 747 retired and did it get the farewell it deserved?
The Queen of the Skies
India has four Boeing 747s. The Boeing 747, named 'Agra,' which made its final exit on Monday from the Mumbai airport was inducted in 1996. Air India's last operational flight of a jumbo jet was from Delhi to Mumbai in March 2021. The airlines first welcomed the Boeing 747 into its fleet on March 22, 1971. Since their last flight in 2021, these 747s have been stationed at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) deregistered all four Boeing 747s in 2022. The move came just months after the Tata Group took over Air India in January 2022.

Why is the Queen Being Retired?

The move away from the 747s, while steeped in nostalgia, is necessitated by the harsh realities of modern aviation economics and safety considerations. Despite the historical significance and the awe these jumbo jets have inspired over decades, the stark reality of their involvement in some of the most devastating airline accidents cannot be overlooked.

Throughout its decades of operation, the Boeing 747 has not just been a commercial airliner; it has played a crucial role in India’s aviation history. This venerable aircraft has transported presidents and prime ministers and has been at the forefront during critical moments, such as the mass evacuation of Indians from war-torn regions. Despite its storied history and the deep emotional connection it fostered among its many admirers, many believe that the farewell accorded to the Boeing 747 was lacklustre and did not do justice to its legacy. Fans expressed disappointment over the plane’s final moments, noting that it was sent off covered in dust, which seemed an unfitting end for such a storied aircraft.
After the Tata Group acquired Air India in 2022, the company asked U.K based remarketing firm Skytech-AIC to sell all the four Boeing 747’s to interested parties. Many believe while the Tata Group may have made some money through this process of sales, there is a strong sentiment that the company should have orchestrated a more memorable goodbye for the B747, perhaps even preserving one of the B747s in a museum to serve as a lasting tribute to its invaluable contributions, allowing future generations to appreciate this remarkable chapter in aviation history.
What Happens to the Boeing 747 Now?
Air India, having concluded an era with the iconic Boeing 747, has transferred its last four aircraft of this model to AerSale, a US-based aftermarket aircraft broker known for handling aged commercial jets. This transition marks the final chapter in the storied life of these jumbos.
AerSale specialises not only in the sale of used aircraft and engines but also in managing the end stages of an aircraft's life cycle. The Boeing 747, which took its final journey from Mumbai on Monday has landed at Plainfield, US, where it will be cannibalised for spare parts, a common fate for planes nearing the end of their operational lives. Stripped down for valuable components, these Boeing 747s will contribute their parts to the maintenance and repair of other aircraft. This dismantling marks a conclusion to the Boeing 747’s illustrious chapter in aviation history with Air India.
